Now as never before in the history of our country is a time of awakenings, a need for stories that can bridge distances with truth, healing and solidarity, a collective recognition of the threads that bind us and the inspiration and hope that makes us human. – Artistic Director, Jacqulyn Buglisi

Bessies Awards 2020 Special Citation Honoree Jacqulyn Buglisi for the Table of Silence Project

The award-winning Buglisi Dance Theatre is acclaimed for poignant, theatrical dances and multi-disciplinary collaborations that promote awareness of global issues and embolden audiences to recognize within themselves their own humanity. Based in NYC, the company was founded in 1993 by Artistic Director Jacqulyn Buglisi, Terese Capucilli, Christine Dakin and Donlin Foreman, who performed together as Principal Dancers of the Martha Graham Dance Company.

BDT’s repertoire of over 100 original works is seen on such companies as the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the Richmond Ballet, and Charlotte Ballet, to name a few. Celebrating its 27th year, BDT performs its NYC Home seasons at New York Live Arts, The Ailey Citigroup Theater, Baryshnikov Arts Center, and The Joyce Theater. World-class production values have won BDT invitations to the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Vail International Dance Festival, Kaatsbaan International Dance Center, The Kravis Center, The Sosnoff Theater, Society of Performing Arts, Houston; Dance St. Louis’ Spring to Dance Festival, Dance Masters, Wesleyan University Center for the Arts; and abroad to festivals in Australia, Czech Republic, Italy, Israel and Mexico.

Fundamental to the company’s mission are interactive educational residencies, commissions and restagings of company repertoire, most recently at UC, Santa Barbara, Marymount Manhattan College, Yale School of Drama, and George Mason University. BDT's repertoire is archived in the Jerome Robbins Dance Division, New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.  Among the company’s honors are Proclamations from Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio for uniting the community through the Table of Silence Project 9/11 performance ritual for peace at Lincoln Center, now in its 10th year. Hailed in the Wall Street Journal as “a gift of dance to the city”, the Table of Silence Project has been seen by over 2 million people via live stream across all 50 states and in 229 countries.
